As every September 22 since 1998, at the global level, citizens and governments from different parts of the world come together in one day to celebrate World Car Free Day.
For this reason, the Municipal Planning Institute of Mazatlán invites people to travel on foot, by bicycle or by public transport.
It is a call to all city dwellers to reflect on the excessive use of the car on a large scale and the damage it causes in terms of environmental pollution, noise, traffic accidents, etc.
In México, it is decreed as “National Day Without a Car” on September 22 of each year, published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on May 11, 2018 and a call is made to local governments to direct actions to improve infrastructure of other alternative modes of transport to the car and more friendly to the environment.
In Mazatlán, we at the Municipal Planning Institute, committed to promoting more active and sustainable mobility and given that the number of private cars continues to increase in our city (currently 1 car for every 4 people), we have joined these initiatives, organizing activities to motivate citizens to choose other means of transport over the car.
Last year, with the support of the Secretary of Public Safety and Municipal Traffic, we organized a pedestrian tour through the streets of the Historic Center, in which the roads were closed to private cars, only allowing the passage of public transport and emergency vehicles. and where the participants took a tour evaluating the conditions of the sidewalks and roads through which they passed.
This year we would like the call to be massive and for all those who are willing to participate to do so, at some point during the day; that they choose for ONE day, to walk, use a bicycle or use public transport to go to work or their daily activities.
Undoubtedly, there are many benefits of the automobile in our lives, but the message of “World Car Free Day” goes beyond “leaving the car at home for a day”: it is an invitation to think about our health and that of others. others, to think about improving our coexistence.
