He Director Kirk DeMicco He considers that the strength of animation as a film genre is telling a story through images that come to life like in a fairy tale.

This allowed him to have total freedom when building the environment of the movie Krakens and Mermaids: Meet the Gillmans which will be released soon, in which brings the krakens to the real world and makes them live with humans.

“This particular movie is all about doubling the credibility of the story, it’s a girl whose family is blue and they say they’re from Canada, and people believe them. It is a comedy mechanism that carries credibility, and at the same time where animation can take the scale, ”he said in an interview.

The film follows in the footsteps of Ruby, a shy teenager who is part of a legendary royal lineage of mythical sea krakens. and whose destiny in the depths of the oceans is greater than he ever dreamed.

The filmmaker, who has also been at the forefront of titles like Alive and The Croods, stressed that with so much content available, people are no longer willing to be taken on fantastic journeys through audiovisual products as before, but he celebrates that animation still have that power.

For its part, the producer of the film, Kelly Clooney added that “as animation has progressed, we have the ability to really do whatever and take our audiences anywhere.””.

“In our world (the one in the film) there is a lot of detail in all the textures, everything can feel so real and so tactile. We created this world that is completely fictional, it’s like a fairy tale world,” she added.

Exploring the ocean floor

Given that a large part of the film takes place at the bottom of the sea, for the creative team it was a fun challenge to reimagine the figure of the kraken, and away from that terrifying creature that everyone has in mind.

“They are sea creatures that live on Earth, you put clothes on them and you adapt them to the way of life. Ruby realizes the super powers of her becoming a giant kraken, we focus on how to maintain the power of her, so that this girl feels empowered, and at the same time that it is somewhat aspirational ”.

Kelly stressed that she also sought to portray the flexible anatomy of squids and cephalopods a fact that in turn helped them create the universe in which the story takes place.

It is a mythical being that exists, but no one has seen his kingdom. So that was very exciting for the whole team, exploring what that world would look like, they really took notes of the squid anatomy,” she concluded.
