President Andrés Manuel López Obrador proposed this Wednesday to the Political Coordination Board of the Congress of the Union, that, in case an agreement is not reached, the election of the four new directors of the National Electoral Institute for the period 2023-2032 will be carried out using the insaculation method, so that there are no quotas and “rinsing” between parties.
“If there is no agreement, because two thirds are also needed, the insaculation method is used, that is, a lottery and that is how it is decided; I think you have to choose two women and two men out of the four, so my opinion is that they should not negotiate as they were before, one for you, one for you and two for me, no, they should go to the insaculation, it is a very respectful proposal, that they do not negotiate”, he pointed out.
“That there is no quota and that it is fortune, Machiavelli would say, which is luck. Machiavelli used to say that virtue, virtue and luck are needed in politics, well, of course I am not a legislator, I am the head of the Executive, but it would be very good if a rinse was not carried out, so they even drew up the agreements by unanimity, hopefully and it will be that way”.
The president of the National Electoral Institute, Lorenzo Córdova Vianello, as well as the councilors Adriana Margarita Favela Herrera, José Roberto Ruiz Saldaña and Ciro Murayama Rendón, will conclude their duties on April 3. Their replacements will be elected by two thirds of the Chamber of Deputies, for a period of nine years.
On March 28, Moisés Ignacio Mier Velazco, president of the Political Coordination Board of the lower house, stated that his party Morena supported the possibility that the election of INE electoral advisers be done through a poll.
However, in the event that this method was decided, the Puebla politician emphasized that the draw should be carried out in San Lázaro and not in the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation.
