PARIS.- Two climate activists staged a surprising act of protest at the Louvre Museum in Paris, France, by throwing soup at the protective glass that protects Leonardo da Vinci’s famous work, the Mona Lisa.
The women, identified with t-shirts bearing the inscription ‘Foodriposte’ (‘food response’), took advantage of the event to demand a more sustainable food system.
In a video shared on social networks, the activists are seen throwing the soup against the protective glass of the painting, while shouting slogans that highlight the importance of a healthy food system.
“What is the most important? “Art or the right to healthy and sustainable food?” they exclaimed before the astonished gaze of those present.
The activists argued that the French agricultural system is sick and that farmers are suffering serious consequences. «Our agrarian system is sick. “Our farmers die working,” they expressed during the protest.

In response to the incident, Louvre staff quickly intervened, placing black panels in front of the Mona Lisa and evacuating the room. Two people were arrested by Paris police in connection with the incident.
The group behind the protest, called ‘Food Riposte’, has claimed on its website that the French government is not meeting its climate commitments and has called for the creation of a state-backed food system, similar to the health system, that ensures better access to healthy food and provides adequate income to farmers.
Meanwhile, against a backdrop of agrarian unrest in France, angry farmers have used tractors to block roads and complicate traffic across the country in recent days.
They demand fair remuneration for their products, less bureaucracy and protection against cheap imports.
