UN agency for Palestinians isolated – El Sol de Mazatlán

JERUSALEM. Israel promised to end the presence in Gaza of the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), embroiled in controversy over the alleged role of some of its employees in the Hamas attack on October 7.

The United States announced that it was temporarily suspending its funding to the agency, a decision echoed by Australia, Canada, Italy, the United Kingdom, Finland, the Netherlands, and Germany.

The director of UNRWA, Philippe Lazzarini, considered it “shocking to see that funds for the Agency are suspended in reaction to the accusations against a small group of its staff,” taking into account that measures have already been adopted and that the aid “depends on survival of two million people” in the Gaza Strip.

UNRWA, created in 1949 and long targeted by Israeli authorities, fired several of its employees after Israel accused them of being involved in the deadly incursion of the Islamist movement into the south of the Jewish state. According to the United States, the UN agency expelled 12 of its employees.

The specific facts of which they are accused have not come to light. But the head of Israeli diplomacy stated that UNRWA had no future in the Gaza Strip, where the fighting does not let up.

The government wants to “make sure that UNRWA is not part” of the solution in the Palestinian territory after the war, said Foreign Minister Israel Katz.

Katz stressed his willingness to “stop” all the agency’s activities and called on donors to favor agencies “that are sincerely dedicated to peace and development.”

Hamas then denounced Israeli “threats” against UNRWA and urged the UN and other international organizations not to “give in to threats and blackmail.”

VITAL ROLE

The Islamist group, listed as a “terrorist organization” by Israel, the United States and the European Union, accused Israel of wanting to “cut off funds and deprive” Gazans of any aid.

UNRWA, which intervenes in the occupied Palestinian territories, faced difficulties in financing its operations in recent years. The United States, its largest contributor, had canceled its financing during the term of former President Donald Trump.

The arrival of Joe Biden to the presidency gave him a break, with the announced restoration of aid in 2021.

Relations between Israel and UNRWA worsened after the UN agency blamed Israeli tanks for firing at one of its refugee shelters in Khan Younis, southern Gaza.

UNRWA was created to help refugees from the 1948 war following the founding of Israel and provides humanitarian, education and health services to Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. It helps about two-thirds of Gaza’s 2.3 million people and is playing a critical role during the war Israel launched to eliminate Hamas.

MASSACRE PERSISTS

Following the ruling of the International Court of Justice to require Israel to prevent genocide during its offensive in Gaza, Israeli attacks and bombings caused more than 170 deaths and 300 injuries during the last 24 hours, while fighting intensifies in the south from the Palestinian enclave, Palestinian sources reported.

Israel and Hamas exchanged fire on their 113th day of war, with bloody battles near the main hospitals in the southern Gaza Strip, while the death toll in the Palestinian enclave rose to more than 26,250, most of them children and women. .

Israel assured that it is carrying out “precise operations” in the main hospitals of Khan Younis, Nasser and Al Amal, arguing that the militants operate from inside. The hospitals have denied that there are armed men inside.

In the courtyards of the Naser hospital, which houses about 150 members of the medical staff who care for 350 patients, as well as about 18 thousand displaced people, 150 dead were buried, while another 30 bodies could not be identified in the morgue.
