Mazatlán.- Officially this Wednesday, March 20, at 00:00, the shrimp ban begins in the Mexican Pacific Ocean, and all vessels that are offshore must return to their corresponding ports.

The president of the Union of Shipowners of the Pacific Coast, Jesús Omar Lizárraga Manjarrez, stated that until this month, March, shrimp reached the appropriate level.

But it was too late since since the start of the harvest they had not captured the commercial sizes of U10 and up and these arrived when the date of the ban was already upon us.

The fishing leader said that the sizes they were able to catch in March were U12 and U15, but he regretted the weather and their commercial prices that did not help him to have a more profitable activity in the season.

Lizárraga Manjarrez pointed out that, during this month of March, only 10 percent of the fleet that left for captures since the beginning of the 2023 season remained on the high seas and they will return.

“There are very few vessels that are working on the high seas, we know that at the start of the season, unfortunately, 50 percent of the fleet managed to go out to catch fish.

“As time went by the percentage fell and until now some 10 percent of the fleet will remain operating”

He said that before this situation, his fellow fishermen were already working in other activities that have nothing to do with fishing.

Finally, he pointed out that the outlook for the next 2024-2025 season looks discouraging, since the people who are dedicated to the activity are better off migrating to other jobs, so another problem is approaching for the sector and that is labor. for the start of captures.
