Mazatlán. – The president of the Local Livestock Association in Mazatlán, José Antonio Lizárraga Rivera, called on producers and inhabitants of mountain areas to avoid causing forest fires by burning grasslands and cigarette butts, especially after the recent incidents in the community of El Moral and areas of San Ignacio.
He stressed that this practice does not contribute at all to mitigating the drought that currently affects the rural communities of Mazatlán, and that, in fact, it further aggravates the situation, since a fire wreaks havoc on the environment where food is produced.
«You have to be very careful at this time. I want to invite all people, ranchers and those who live in the towns, to take extreme precautions and avoid throwing babichas (cigarette butts), since we are in a time of extreme dryness,” he emphasized.
Lizárraga Rivera pointed out that the Livestock Association provides support in drilling wells for communities with water scarcity in mountain areas, but warned about especially dry spots that are prone to fires, which aggravates the social situation.
In addition, he reported that so far only one fire has been recorded in the entire rural mountain area of Mazatlán, but he reiterated his call to the population to collaborate in fire prevention.
