Historic UN resolution on Palestine
In a historic vote at the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, an overwhelming majority of 143 states backed a resolution to reconsider the integration of Palestine as a full state.
The resolution grants Palestine new powers that expand its current status as a “non-member observer state” and defines its participation in the General Assembly. The vote reflects clear international support for Palestine, with only nine countries voting against and 25 abstentions.
This majority significantly exceeds the required two-thirds threshold. This move follows a previous attempt on April 18, when the Security Council rejected full membership for Palestine with the only vote against the United States. Despite this setback, the General Assembly vote suggests renewed support for the Palestinian cause internationally.
