The United Kingdom ambassador to México, Jon Benjamin, was fired in 2024 after pointing an assault rifle at a local embassy employee, the incident was recorded in a video circulating on social networks.

According to The Financial Times, Benjamin was on an official trip to Durango and Sinaloa when inside a vehicle and occupying the passenger seat he took a gun and pointed it at another official.

Benjamin was fired last April, after this incident. It is presumed that it occurred since foreign officials who visit dangerous areas of México usually travel with armed personnel for their protection. In addition to losing his position, Benjamin is no longer listed as an ambassador on the UK government portal.

The official had joined the diplomatic service in 1986 and had been to Turkey, Ghana, Indonesia and the United States. In 2021 he was appointed ambassador to México and had previously directed an academy for foreign service officers.

According to sources familiar with the incident cited by the FT, the video was recorded on an official trip by the diplomat to Durango and Sinaloa two states in northern México that regularly suffer violence from drug trafficking cartels.

X’s account (@subdiplomatic) emphasizes that the event is only the “tip of the iceberg” of the “harassment” suffered by legation workers in México.

Benjamin does not appear on the embassy’s website, but instead the chargé d’affaires, Rachel Brazier, appears as the head of the embassy.

The British Foreign Office told the FT that it is “aware of this incident” and that “appropriate action has been taken.”

“When internal issues arise, the Foreign Office has robust human resources processes to address them,” the ministry said.
