Mazatlán.- The agricultural sector is experiencing an atypical year due to temperature changes and the low price of vegetables, which severely affects small producers. Many of them abandoned their crops halfway, as evidenced by the price of chili, which has reached 1.00 pesos per kilo.

Rufino Prado Yuriar, president of the Río de las Cañas Farmers Association in Escuinapa, mentioned that the price of vegetables fell considerably, especially affecting small producers. In particular, the price of chili was extremely low, resulting in serious losses.

He pointed out that some producers managed to resist thanks to the fact that they had sufficient resources to face the difficult agricultural panorama. At the end of the season, the price per kilogram of chili rose to 40 pesos, allowing a slight recovery for some.

«This year has been exceptionally difficult. We haven’t had a year like this in terms of all the crops and the weather. Just to give an example, the mango orchards have bloomed in May, which is unusual.”

The agricultural leader pointed out that, at least, those who resisted until the end of the harvest have been able to recover a little. However, he acknowledged that, although there was production, prices are not favorable for the sector.

Rufino Prado added that it is necessary to regulate this situation so that the agricultural sector can move forward, since every day it faces more abandonment.
