CHETUMAL. – The intense rain that hit the city of Chetumal during the night of Friday and early Saturday morning caused significant damage to homes and caused the displacement of fifty people to temporary shelters.
The governor of the state, Mara Lezama, reported that shelters with food support will be maintained and asked the population to remain vigilant, since more rain is expected in the coming hours.
«We are directly delivering food rations to the families who are in the Parque de las Casitas in Chetumal, who were affected by the floods. “We continue working at ground level to help those who need us most!” reported the state president on the social network X.
Since dawn, personnel from the Mexican Army implemented Plan DNIII-E to help the population, and this Saturday the work to remove garbage and drain flooded streets continued.
According to reports from the authorities, the torrential rain left more than 160 millimeters of precipitation in one hour, damaging houses, household goods and leaving several vehicles underwater.
The government reported that there are three active temporary shelters serving 50 people. The refugees are distributed in the “Eva Sámano De López Mateos” Technical Baccalaureate Study Center, CBTIS 253 in Chetumal and CBTIS 214 in Chetumal.
Heavy rains are expected to continue in the Yucatan Peninsula and Quintana Roo, due to a low pressure trough and a monsoon trough near the Mexican South Pacific coast, along with a low pressure area with cyclonic potential in the Gulf of México.
The situation remains critical and authorities urge the population to stay informed and take the necessary precautions.
