-Mayor Edgar González Zatarain promises swift sanctions against Mazatlán police officers accused of abuse-
Mazatlán, Sinaloa.- Two weekends ago, Mazatlán was the scene of a new police abuse in the Ramón F. Iturbide neighborhood, where municipal police officers assigned to patrol car 307 were caught on video beating a citizen in the middle of the street. The incident has generated a wave of indignation and reactions from local authorities.
The mayor of Mazatlán, Edgar González Zatarain, spoke out about the incident, assuring that firm action will be taken against the police officers involved. “It is a case like any other, the difference is that these are already identified, we already know who they are, the procedure was already started the same Saturday that it started to circulate, and attention began to be given. What we are looking for is for sanctions to be imposed as quickly as possible,” declared the mayor.
Unlike other recent cases, the perpetrators have already been identified because they were not wearing balaclavas, which made it easier to recognize them in the video posted on social media.
González Zatarain regretted that this type of behavior persists among police forces. He stressed that aggression, abuse and lack of dialogue with citizens are unacceptable practices that must be eradicated. “I don’t know what is wrong with the police, it is really the bad habit they have always had, of offending, attacking, hitting, they do not have the decency to dialogue with people. The thing is that it is something we have lived with for a long time and today they are exposed,” he said.
The mayor said he expects the resolution to be issued in approximately 45 days, although it is not ruled out that it may take a little longer. The aim is to have the police officers punished for abusing their power. The recording of the abuse was made by residents of the neighborhood from inside their homes. In the video, the witnesses wonder why the police are beating the citizen and roughly putting him in the patrol car, pointing out that, according to them, there were no grounds for such aggression.
