This is what we know about the arrest of Ismael ‘Mayo’ Zambada

The news spread like wildfire throughout Sinaloa Mexico, the United States and the entire world: Ismael “Mayo” Zambada García, leader of the Cartel Sinaloa was arrested in El Paso, Texas, by the CIA, in collaboration with the FBI and the United States Department of State.

Along with him, they captured Joaquín Guzmán López, son of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera and brother of Ovidio, both detained in the United States.

The news was first confirmed by the Attorney General of the United States, Merrick B. Garland.

He described them as important arrests in the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime.

These arrests, he stressed, represent a significant blow to the Cartel. Sinaloa one of the most powerful criminal organizations in the world.

He also reaffirmed the Justice Department’s commitment to continue pursuing drug trafficking leaders and dismantling their operations.

He highlighted the collaboration between U.S. and Mexican law enforcement agencies in achieving these arrests.

México had no role in arrest of Ismael “Mayo” Zambada: SPSC

For her part, at the La Mañanera Conference led by the President of México, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Rosa Isela Rodríguez, head of the SPSC, said that they were informed about the arrest, but did not participate in it.

“The question is whether we participated in yesterday’s arrest and the answer is no: the Mexican government did not participate in this arrest or surrender, this is not the case,” he said.

The Mexican President offered a brief comment on the arrest, in which he noted that it strengthens the fight against drug cartels, but does not solve the problem.

First appearance

According to US media, “Mayo” Zambada made his first appearance at 8:00 a.m., where he pleaded not guilty to the 38 charges against him, including drug trafficking and the manufacture and distribution of fentanyl.

They offered a reward of 15 million dollars to anyone who provided information leading to his capture.

The new hearing date is July 31.
