The Government banned 93 demonstrations in 2023, a quarter of them promoted by political parties

In 2023, the Government Delegations banned a total of 93 demonstrations previously notified of their holding, which represents 0.29% of those held; a quarter of the unauthorized ones had been promoted by political parties, according to figures compiled by the Ministry of the Interior. In its statistical yearbook, collected by Europa Press, the Ministry of the Interior indicates that 31,715 demonstrations were reported last year, 6.7% less than in 2022. In 31 of them there were incidents, the majority (24) being related to traffic cuts, while in only two there were incidents classified under the section of “coercion and retentions”. The 93 prohibitions represent a 40% decrease if 2023 is compared to the previous year, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior, which does not include information relating to Catalonia and the Basque Country, or the island Delegations of Ibiza-Formentera and Lanzarote. INDEPENDENTISTS AND IMMIGRANTS AMONG THE PROMOTERS In the breakdown by promoters, the Interior Ministry notes 2,966 demonstrations announced by political parties, of which 23 were prohibited. The largest number of prohibitions, with 24, was recorded in the category of civic associations, with 9,998 demonstrations reported. The company and workers’ committees reported 1,242 demonstrations, with 18 prohibitions, while the unions did the same on 9,921 occasions, with the refusal to hold demonstrations in 12 of them. The promoters include categories such as groups of independentists, immigrants, students or ecological associations, although none of them were prohibited from demonstrating. In addition, there are 7,136 noted in the generic “other promoters”, of which 16 initiatives were rejected. MOTIVATION OF THE DEMONSTRATIONS In another table, the Ministry of the Interior lists the reasons for the demonstrations reported, highlighting the 28 prohibitions for labour issues. On nine occasions the prohibition was related to demonstrations against political and legislative measures, while neighbourhood and agricultural issues accounted for another four cases of prohibitions each. Two of the 626 demonstrations reported were also prohibited whose motivation was the “freedom of prisoners of terrorist groups” and others were noted relating to protests against gender violence, environmentalists, health or immigration issues. In a total of 39 prohibited demonstrations, the motivation is not specified. The Ministry of the Interior specifies that the category of “prohibited demonstrations” includes those that were not authorised after the communication, a figure that does not distinguish whether they finally took place or not.
