September, a month of contrast for fishermen

MAZATLÁN.- The patriotic month, September, has been a month of contrasts for fishermen in Mazatlán and the Mexican Pacific: on the one hand, the start of the fishing season, and on the other, the high probability of hurricanes that has left homes in mourning.

This situation always causes concern among fishermen, who over the years have had to bear hard memories.

This fear is deeply rooted in the collective memory of the region, especially due to disasters such as Hurricane Ismael, which occurred on September 14, 1995, which marked one of the most devastating episodes in the history of fishing in México.

Storms and hurricanes that make landfall during this month have the potential to cause flooding, destruction of infrastructure, and loss of life on both land and sea.

FISHERMEN SEPTEMBER

Fishermen do not forget the tragedies of September

Alberto Gutiérrez, a fisherman from Alfredo V. Bonfil Park, remembers, with a broken voice, how “Ismael” took away friends and acquaintances from him, leaving a disaster in his wake, something that will never be erased from their minds, an experience that he would not wish on anyone.

“This month brings excitement to all Pacific fishermen because it is time to work again, to seek sustenance in a trade that loses more strength with each passing day.

“But at the same time it scares us because we remember that it is the season of cyclones and hurricanes,” he said.

For this reason, it is vital that both fishermen and coastal communities stay informed and prepared throughout September.

Constant monitoring of weather forecasts is essential to prevent tragedies similar to that of “Ismael.”

Local authorities and harbour masters often issue warnings and recommendations to minimise the risks, but the unpredictable nature of these phenomena forces everyone to remain in a constant state of alert.

September is a constant reminder of the vulnerability of coastal areas to natural disasters, and the importance of preparation to face these challenges in one of the most essential activities for Mazatlán’s economy and culture: fishing.
