Following the high temperatures that began to be recorded in the first months of 2024, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) announced that a benefit would be applied to residents of different states of the Mexican Republic, which is called the summer subsidy. It should be noted that this seeks to apply an exclusive discount for domestic use, which means that it does not apply to companies.
Furthermore, this program was given with the purpose of not harming the population, since high temperatures cause excessive consumption of electric light. In order to obtain the summer rate no procedure had to be done, because this was automatically reflected in the receipt issued by the CFE However, this only applied as long as the established minimum was not exceeded.
It was on February 22, when an agreement was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF), where it was reported on the summer allowance for the states beneficiaries from Baja California, Sonora, Sinaloa and Nayarit. In addition, the days on which this initiative came into effect were different in each locality, for example, in Baja California, it began on May 1, while in Sonora it began on April 1 by decree of Governor Alfonso Durazo, who reached an agreement with CFE.
What is the 1E tariff subsidy?
One of the rates applied in some states of the Mexican Republic was 1E, which was applied to loads not considered high consumption according to the DAC rate, connected individually to each residence, dwelling, or house, in communities that register an average monthly temperature in summer of at least 32°C. Likewise, these services were only supplied at low voltage and no other general-use rates were applied.
Why will CFE remove the subsidy?
As mentioned at the beginning, the summer subsidy was made due to excessive electricity consumption due to high temperatures. It is important to remember that the summer season is comprised of the six consecutive warmest months of the year, which were set by the supplier, as defined by the Electricity Industry Law, based on the thermometric observations issued by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.
Likewise, this benefit was provided to residents of 13 states of the United Mexican States, among which are Baja California, Chihuahua, Durango, Sonora, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Tabasco, Yucatán, Quintana Roo and Campeche, as well as it was applied automatically, it will also be withdrawn with the same modality October 31, 2024. Therefore, the rates outside the summer season will be:
- Basic consumption: 1,019 for each of the first 75 kilowatt-hours.
- Intermediate consumption: 1,243 for each of the next 125 kilowatt-hours.
- Excess consumption: 3,633 for each additional kilowatt-hour to the interiors.
