Mazatlán Captaincy guarantees safety, but does not decide fishing dates

MAZATLÁN.- The Port Captaincy of Mazatlán has no authority or influence over the departure dates of fishing vessels; however, it plays a key role in preparing and regulating the vessels before they set sail, reported Luis Antonio Barreiro Varela, Port Captain.

Barreiro Varela responded to the concerns of fishermen in the Huizache-Caimanero lagoon system, who believe that lifting the ban early could encourage poaching.

“We do our best to support everyone. At meetings, when I am asked for my opinion, I give it, but it is not up to me to set dates. I only make sure that everything is in order, with the correct documentation, so that the ships can set sail without problems,” he said.

The captain stressed that, although the Captaincy does not determine the dates, it does ensure that all vessels comply with the safety requirements for going out to sea.

The aspects reviewed include safety certificates, verification of fire extinguishers, life jackets and a detailed inspection of the hull, ensuring that each vessel is in safe sailing condition.

He indicated that they are responsible for verifying that the crew members match the lists presented. The rigor of the inspections seeks to avoid any incidents during fishing operations, ensuring both the safety of the crew and compliance with current regulations.
