MAZATLÁN.- The Mayor of Mazatlán, Édgar González Zataráin, said that as a municipal authority he will continue to defend access to beaches, so that there are enough for everyone. This, after the community began to denounce on social media last week the closure of some beach accesses.

Among the blocked accesses is one of the best known on Avenida Gaviotas, which included the entrance to professional beach volleyball courts.
He said that they are already taking action and that even the Director of Planning, Paúl Galindo, is insisting on reaching agreements.
“There is a specific case of a door, there is another case in which we are going to contribute legally because we were there,” he commented.
González Zataráin pointed out that as an authority they cannot make statements, but they can reach consensus so that there are free and public accesses and these accesses are not privatized by owners who appear over time.
He denied that during his administration the sale of land adjacent to beach access had been authorized; on the contrary, he said that some green areas had been recovered.
He clarified that the beach accesses that were recently remodeled do belong to the municipality.
“As such, streets, all streets and accesses duly accredited as vehicular, that are not corridors, with municipal investment, with steps, with remodeling, accredit the property for the Municipality and obviously the Federal part is Semarnat,” he commented.
Over the weekend, beach users protested against these accesses, which had recently been taken over by owners, and even presented themselves with a court order, blocking the passage of those who regularly go to the beach.
What does the law say about access to beaches?
According to Article 8 of the General Law on National Assets, access to beaches and the federal maritime land zone adjacent to them cannot be inhibited, restricted, hindered or conditioned.
In addition, according to the Law, access to the beaches must be every 500 metres along the entire coastal promenade.
