Mazatlán.- The shrimp catching season in the cooperatives in the south of Mazatlán has been especially difficult this year. Although about 100 kilograms were captured on the first day, production has decreased drastically in the following days.
Miguel Ángel Torres, secretary of the La Sinaloense cooperative of El Ostial, reported that the drop in production has affected other cooperatives, many of which have chosen to abandon the activity.
“The first day there were good catches, but then not anymore. The cooperatives have left the Huizache area. Some did not even reach 100 kilos, such as the cooperative of Los Pozos, El Iguanito, Teodoro Beltrán and La Sinaloense of El Ostial.”

Torres highlighted that many fishermen have abandoned shrimp fishing, since the costs of equipment and inputs have not been recovered due to poor harvesting.

They will ask for support due to low shrimp catches
The fishing leader pointed out that, as in previous years, they plan to request economic support and temporary jobs from the State Government to compensate for the lack of income.
Despite the complicated situation, the Nueva Sinaloense and Sinaloense cooperatives of El Ostial will continue fishing during the days of the full moon, in the hope that the change of tide and the rains will improve conditions in the lagoons and bodies of water, thus saving the season.
