Members of the Mexican Armed Forces arrested Edwin Antonio ‘N’, alias ‘El Max’, alleged leader of a criminal cell linked to the ‘Mayo Zambada’ faction of the Pacific Cartel, during an operation in which 19 alleged hitmen died. .
The arrest took place in the rural community of Plan de Oriente, 11 kilometers from Culiacán, capital of the northern state of Sinaloa The Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) reported this Tuesday.
The operation, framed in the so-called “100 Day Plan”, is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to reduce levels of violence and strengthen the rule of law, Sedena detailed.
According to a statement, the capture of the Max occurred after a violent confrontation between the Army and an armed group of more than 30 men, who opened fire on the military in an attempt to prevent the arrest of the alleged criminal leader.
The military elements repelled the attack, which resulted in the death of 19 alleged hitmen, while the rest managed to escape.
The authorities indicated that the military acted in strict accordance with the rule of law, respecting human rights and regulations on the use of force.
During the operation, in addition to the arrest of “el Max”, Four machine guns, 17 long weapons, five short weapons, a Barret rifle, cartridges of various calibers, 13 tactical vests, nine ballistic helmets and seven vehicles were seized.
All the material was made available to the Attorney General’s Office in Culiacán. to continue with the corresponding investigations.
“El Max” is identified as one of the main generators of violence in the region and is linked to several recent episodes of armed confrontations in Culiacán, a city that has been the recurring scene of conflicts between organized crime groups.
The capture of this alleged criminal leader occurs in a context of intensification of military operations in Sinaloa, a key state in drug trafficking activities.
The Army, the Air Force and the National Guard reaffirmed their commitment to continue working to dismantle the criminal organizations that operate in the country, underscoring its intention to maintain security and peace among the population.
