Mazatlán.- The 2024 shrimp season has been especially difficult for El Ostial fishermen, due to the low quantity and size of shrimp caught, which has made it difficult to recover input costs and obtain profits.

Miguel Ángel Torres, secretary of the La Sinaloense fishing cooperative, pointed out that this situation has led many fishermen to abandon the activity and seek sustenance in agriculture and construction.

“The fishermen are the same, but the administration of the cooperative could not continue. There was very little shrimp, and it was small; “It was not profitable for the cooperative to assume the expenses.”

“80 percent of the fishermen have already migrated to the countryside and construction. Of the thousand that existed, only about 150 remain,” he said.

Torres explained that, weeks ago, the community hoped that the lunar effect would increase the presence of shrimp, but the results were disappointing.

In addition, he mentioned that they expect support from the state DIF system; However, the program could be temporarily suspended due to insecurity in the region, leaving families in a situation of uncertainty.
