Unfavorable ocean currents aggravate fishing crisis in Mazatlán

Mazatlán.- The fishing season in Mazatlán has been very unfavorable and unpleasant for fishermen, who face an economic crisis every day.

This is due to the scarcity of catches of both shrimp and scale species, directly affecting the livelihood of many families in the municipality.

THE president of the Playa Sur Fishermen’s Union, Julio César González Corona, explained that low production has generated more losses than profits, which is why they operate with red numbers.

He explained that the lack of favorable currents and the low flow of species has reduced catches to minimum levels, although they maintain hope in the dorado season to alleviate the crisis.

“The situation right now is critical, it is something that everyone knows, we are waiting for the dorado fishing, but the current towards the south has dominated a lot…

“People go and take out 30 to 40 kilos, they don’t pay us, there isn’t enough business,” he noted.

Given the difficult situation, González Corona made a public call to the Municipal Government to provide support to the 80 fishing families in the area, who depend on this activity for their subsistence.

The fishing leader proposed the delivery of food supplies as a temporary relief measure, given that the fishermen already received financial support from the Bienpesca program for the year.

But, he regretted, the amount was insufficient to cover his basic needs in this low season.

The fishing leader insisted that the option of requesting food supplies is an urgent and reasonable need, given that access to other economic support is limited for them.
