Mexicans know their country

In the last five years, the Aztec nation has experienced a notable growth in domestic tourism driven largely by the rise of platforms for booking accommodation.

According to internal Airbnb data, the number of domestic travelers booking spaces within the country through the platform has almost triplicate in the first half of 2024, compared to the same period in 2019.

More than half of the nights booked in México through the application are booked by Mexicans. Today, domestic tourism represents most of the business of this type of services in the country. Making it possible for more Mexicans to get to know every corner of their nation is a priority.

This commitment is reflected in the increase in reserved nights, on lodging platforms, by Mexicans traveling within the country, mainly in states such as:

  • Sinaloa
  • Nayarit
  • Jalisco
  • Oaxaca
  • México City

Likewise, during the first half of 2024, the following states received the greater number of guests traveling within your same state of residence:

  • Baja California Sur
  • Jalisco
  • Sinaloa

“This local tourism and new destinations has proven to be crucial to redistribute the industry and strengthen local economies. During 2023, more than 40 cities and towns in México received their first reservation and more than 90% of these destinations are not urban.”

— Ángel Terral, director of Airbnb México.

In 2023 alone, 850,000 new Mexican users were registered, of which approximately 80% of your booked nights were for domestic travel and about 60% of reservations were made less than 500 kilometers from their city of origin.

That same year, more than 1,200 destinations in México received at least one reservation through one of these applications.

This trend benefits Mexican families because hosts offer a wide range of space options that can adapt to the different needs of travelers depending on the area they need and their budget.

  • About 33% indicated that they wanted a more local experience and stay out of a tourist area
  • About 13% wanted flexibility with the time or destination of your trip

This redistribution of tourism is also crucial for local economies that benefit from receiving more travelers.

Expanding the offer and the way in which users can reserve accommodation is also essential in more established destinations such as México City, one of the five destinations in the country where the arrivals of Mexican travelers have grown the most to enjoy the capital of their country. .

In 2023, 60% of reservations in CDMX were made by Mexicans.

Last year, guests staying in a space booked through websites generated more than 15,000 million pesos in economic contribution to the city and supported more than 63,000 jobs.
