The state of Chihuahua was ranked fourth with the most homicidal violence in the country, according to the Monitoring of Homicides by State of the organization México Evalúa.
The association took into account the number of homicides recorded during 2024, from January to October, and used estimates from the National Population Council to obtain the homicide rate per 100,000 inhabitants in the states. Chihuahua reached 42.4 homicides per 100 thousand inhabitants, more than 20 above the national average, which is 22. According to the analysis, “in the official narrative, the rate of intentional homicides per 100 thousand inhabitants a national level will continue to be used as the main metric to measure the success of the public safety strategy.” However, this “data (…) does not inform about the situation that each of the entities is going through and makes invisible the local dynamics of violence, its causes and impacts.” Quantitative analysis allows us to know if an entity has positive, regular, negative or very negative behavior, depending on whether it has rates higher or lower than the national average, coupled with an upward or downward trend. With the figures from January to October 2024, Colima is the first place in terms of the rate, with 91.3 people violently murdered per 100 thousand inhabitants, although it presents a decrease of 6.05 percent in that rate, compared to 2023 , which places it as the twenty-third state with the highest favorable difference. On the other hand, the one that registered the greatest unfavorable difference was Tabasco, which between 2023 and 2024 had a growth of 242.8 percent in its homicide rate per year, which with data from the first 10 months of this year reported 29 per 100 thousand population. Considering these data, Chihuahua is the fourth state with the highest homicide rate, with 42.4 per 100 thousand inhabitants. Above are Baja California (49.9), Morelos (63.4) and the aforementioned Colima. These data represent a decrease of 4.3 percent compared to last year, leaving Chihuahua as the twenty-first state with the highest improvement. These indicators show that Chihuahua has a negative behavior, since it has a rate higher than the national average, but with a downward trend compared to last year. Under the consideration that Chihuahua is part of the northwest region for México Evalúa, along with Baja California, Baja California Sur, Durango, Sinaloa and Sonora, the organization specifies that violence decreased in this sector, which slightly improved the context of insecurity. “Despite the above,” highlights México Evalúa, “these regions remain the most violent at the national level, due to the prevalence of criminal wars.” In particular, the analysis specifies that the northwest region “suffers the ravages of the breakup of the Cartel of Sinaloa”.
