Abandonment of the Camarón lagoon puts species at risk: Guillermo Zerero

Mazatlán._ With more than a decade of abandonment and pollution, the shrimp lagoon and its species could be lost in Mazatlán, Guillermo Zerero Velo warned.

The director of the Unión Mazatlán Trust said that for 12 years, from the start of the Central Park project, which included the lake or lagoon with islets and bridges, a museum and the aquarium, the shrimp lagoon has not been dredged or attended by experts and has registered mortality of fish due to lack of oxygen, which endangers the species in danger.

“The park, if it is not attended, will lose the water. And if the water is lost, everything is made now,” said the person responsible for coordinating the meetings between the private sector at that time; the municipality, with Carlos Felton as mayor; The State and businessmen, as well as those who executed the project, architects, creatives, designers and experts.

Zerero Velo pointed out that when the shrimp lagoon was drague to clean and clean it, the chemical studies that were made of the sludge that were extracted to make the lake marked that it was the most contaminated area of the city.

In fact, he indicated that those lands of La Laguna were not from the municipality of Mazatlán but of the Tellería family, but the State acquired them.

“Those 15 hectares or 17 hectares were from individuals, they were from the Tellería family, they were not from the city, they were not public property and now they are,” he said.

Therefore, he proposed that now that lake, which is the property of the city, must take care of it.

He stressed that the Central Park at that time triggered investments in Mazatlán in an extraordinary way, because one of the objectives of the project was to generate trust against investors with the park and the aquarium.

“And we become first national and then international note, for people to say: it’s time to invest in Mazatlán,” he said.

Zerero Velo said that they started the road 12 years ago and what he has followed have been good things for Mazatlán.

“12 years old here have happened many good things for Mazatlán and that is why we want the park to end, that the museum is over. And the park is a pride of the city and that lagoon will improve,” he confided.

Hence, he stressed that one of the priorities must be to rescue that lake.

“That lake urgently needs the comprehensive plan, deep and we have the proposal of the biologists. Moreover, right now the project has just arrived, here, from Armando Villalba, to make the batimetry. It is what you have to do to do something for the lake. Just as at the beginning we made a batimetry to define how the lake’s line was going to be and what depth should have, and that was measuring the tides,” he explained.

“That is, the batimetry was in front of the sea, in front of the Malecon, because, in one area, I do not remember what extension, to see the tides, how the tides behaved, because there is water that filters the lake of the Central Park below. Then we had to see how the tides behaved and how the rains behaved. Information of the rains of 50 years and 50 years later forecasts were taken, with specialists.”

Even Zerero Velo said that in that eldes all that was done to define the lake line, its size, its shape and how depth would be.

It was drained at 1.80 meters, but you must continue to dredge and maintain it, because it is going to rip and also has to be oxygenated.

“That is why fish has died, because there have been algae that pollute, there has been a lot of garbage and needs to have a driving plan,” he said.

The Vice President of Communication of Coparmex commented that it is not just about putting swings in the park, but that an office is needed to give it a professional management.

“The central park includes water, water health because it has been neglected for more than 12 years, absolutely nothing has been done. I reiterate: absolutely nothing has been done,” he said.

And analyzing the issue within Coparmex, he advanced requesting a budget to measure the bath of the lake, which would cost 362 thousand 372 pesos, in charge of Armando Villalba.

“This is just to tell us how the lake is and what has to be done. That is the budget right now. What do we do? We are not going to the City Council to say ‘Page you’. No, we are going to get who pays it and that’s it,” he said.

Zerero Velo added that if the lake is managed to dredge and clean up, it will take care of giving it the necessary attention to be monitoring it through an administration formed by citizens and entrepreneurs who watch together with the municipality, since it is a public area.
